Summer Vacations Haliburton Ontario

Well it's that time of the year again to start thinking of 2008 summer vacations with the family and what to do.

The snow is starting to melt and the rain is coming and spring is around the corner. I don't know about you but I have had enough of that snow for this year. The Haliburton Highlands sure got it's share of the white stuff, we know we spent most of the winter with a shovel in our hands. It's time to start planning for summer.

Summer Vacation - Summer Holidays - Summer Break - what ever you want to call it, it's a vacation in the summertime where you get the warmest and longest days of the year.

Summer is a time for family vacations, a trip to the cottage with the kids, a week at a country resort, see new sights along with going to your favourite places. Most of all, it's a time to enjoy each other wherever you may go .... family time .......

Every year a large number of couples and families plan their summer vacation but some wait to the last minute and find it a challenge to get a spot to their liking, so plan ahead as much as you can.

Summer also brings long weekend holiday breaks to enjoy

Canada Day 2008 - July 1 - first long holiday weekend in 2008 starting the summer season

Civic Holiday 2008 - August 4 - get out of the hot city and away from the smog and get some fresh country air

Labour Day 2008 - September 1 - many parades, picnics, fireworks displays, water activities, public art events in Haliburton

Family Vacation - Things to do in the Haliburton Highlands

Many of our resort guests in the summer especially if they have kids will take a day trip to Santa's Village located in Bracebridge, on the beautiful Muskoka River in a natural wooded setting, the Village and Sportsland have something for the whole family.

What's summer vacationing without a trip to Algonquin Park. I can remember my father many many year ago taking me every summer to two places, Algonquin and the Toronto exhibition CNE.

Haliburton has the Walk in the Clouds at the Haliburton Forest. This complete family vacation adventure from start to finish will fill in the whole summer day with fun and adventure.

Got your own ATV or wish to rent one then Haliburton Outdoor Adventure Tours has 1,700km trails covering the Haliburton, Muskoka region, on the Great Canadian Shield, that will blow your mind, through deep woods conditions, rock hopping, river splashing, deep water crossing, to getting down and dirty in the biggest bogs. There are other summer vacation adventures like camping, drive a hummer or yacht cruises see ideas for country holiday vacations.

If you like summer sites to see then the Hawk Lake Log Chute is a must. There were thousands of wooden chutes built in the late 1800's in Ontario and dozens in the Haliburton Highlands and all are gone now but this one. Buttermilk Falls is only 10 minutes away. Fishing is also good in both spots.

Summer - July of 1996 the Haliburton Forest Wolf Centre opened its doors to the general public. The Wolf Centre at Haliburton Forest is a popular vacation idea for the whole family. The wolf pack - Ebony and Citka, the Alpha pair, and their siblings and offspring, - roams freely in a 15 acre enclosure, one of the largest of its kind in the world. The Wolf Centre contains numerous exhibits, a small cinema/classroom, a retail area featuring a wide selection of wolf related books, tapes and graphics as well as a large indoor observatory overlooking the feeding area within the wolf compound.

Lookout tower in Dorset is great for a hike followed by a picnic ending with a view of the summer country side. From 1922 until 1961 the former Department of Lands and Forests established the 82 ft. high Tower as a forest fire lookout providing a 310 square mile viewing radius. Today the tower is now owned and maintained by the Corporation of the Township of Algonquin Highlands and it is estimated that well over 60,000 vehicles access the site annually. Summer has a great view from the tower but if you want to see colours then the fall vacation season is the best.

What's a summer vacation without doing a little hiking and enjoying mother nature in the Haliburton Highlands. Many of our resort guests while on vacation plan a summer morning adventure and head to the Leslie Frost Centre (five minute drive) to take in the fresh country air and get some exercise by hiking along Lake St. Nora. The Leslie Frost Centr is knowned for its great cross country skiing trails in winter but when summer comes these trails are just a sample of beauty this region has to offer. Spring and summer is great but a fall vacation hike can be breath taking.

For more information on hiking at the Frost Centre or anywhere in the Haliburton Highlands see
http://www.trailsandtours.com/trail/63

Make sure when your planning your fall or summer vacations you do a little hiking, you can hike the same trail every day and see something new every time.
